Maybe the early surprise of the season in Chicagoland is Wheaton North, who took care of number 15 Lincoln-Way East last Friday night. The home Falcons took advantage of 4 turnovers Griffin turnovers while they racked-up 375 yards of total offense, including 315 through the air by quarterback Reece Butler, the sportstownchicago.com player of the week. They look to improve to 3-0 this week in the Dupage Valley opener against West Chicago.
And speaking of the Dupage Valley, not a bad start for the conference as they went 14-2 collectively in nonconference play. Wheaton-Warrenville South is the favorite, with Glenbard North and Naperville North also ranked in the top 15, and facing each other this Friday night.
Other top teams who shined included Simeon, who won easily over St. Louis Imagine High School, 50-0. Simeon plays Morgan Park at Gately Stadium for Public League supremacy. St. Rita defeated high touted out-of-state opponent Jefferson City, MO 35-14, and start Catholic Blue play this week at Brother Rice this Saturday. Providence has lost its first two games to tough teams (Morgan Park and Joliet Catholic) and their schedule doesn't get any easier with Loyola, who rolled over Montini last week. However, this Friday will be the Celtics first game at home in New Lenox.
Glenbard West defeated Downers Grove 21-16, but were very sloppy in the victory, committing 15 penalties and costing them 115 yards. This week's sportstownchicago.com game of the week will be two unbeaten teams in Niles Norte Dame, and host, number 17 Chicago Marist in the East Suburban Catholic opener.
